Mumnesia…. what was I saying

Hi Everyone,

Hands up who else has got somewhat forgetful since your little ones entered your life! I thought once Josh arrived the baby brain I adopted during pregnancy would disappear. But no, if anything I’ve become even more dopey! Basically my child has arrived and has stolen my brain cells.

And I bet I’m not the only one; how many of you walk into a room of the house and have absolutely no idea why you went in there. Or you stare into the fridge blankly trying to remember what you went there for! My personal favourite involves food shopping. I can never ever remember everything I need so I sensibly, write a list. I can honestly say every single time I’ve got to the supermarket, I’ve forgotten the list, and left it at home, leaving me to guess what I need, wonder round the shop buying things that I usually don’t even need, thinking “It’s ok, I’ll go back and get what I need tomorrow”, only for the whole charade to start again the next day!

I’ve got forgetful at really obvious stuff too; I used to be an avid texter but now I have become one of these useless people who takes two days to reply, and does so during a 2am feed…. what can I say, its a great opportunity to re-read texts I’ve forgotten about and reply! I am sorry my lovely friends.

I’ve also developed an insanely annoying habit of being half way through a sentence and then going completely blank! Half hilarious, half mortifying, depending who I am talking to at the time.

And it seems I’m not alone. Recently I read that “forgetfulness in new mothers” is officially a genuine scientific fact! Apparently it is all down to tiredness, a change in hormones and stress…. hardly surprising really, and the scary fact is that new mothers lose an average of between 450 and 700 hours in the first year a baby is born! Slightly mental if you as me!

It’s not surprising; we have so much going on in our heads. I feel like my brain never stops; Josh is always the priority, when he needs his next feed, what his next class is, then I have so much blogging stuff in my head. I’m forever writing down ideas for my next post.  And then we have all that usual crap to contend with; what to cook for dinner, what happened in Eastenders, where did I put that milk I just expressed…….!!

So how are us Mummies supposed to cope with the dreaded Mumnesia. Really I should be coping with it a lot better; I was a PA for many years and one of the things I loved about that job was being super organised. Give me a list book and I’m a happy lady! But I’ve been slacking on the whole list and organisational front for the last 18 weeks. So I’ve been on a mission to get it sorted, especially now that things seem to be getting busier with the blog and I would hate to miss any scheduled posts or linkys!

In all seriousness lists are the way forward (so long as you don’t forget to take the ones you need for shopping to the supermarket). And get a diary; I’d be lost without mine. I think one thing I really need to work on is finish one thing before starting the other. For example, as I was writing this I remembered that I need to book a swimming session for Sams next day off so he can take Josh to the pool as he’s not had a chance to yet. But as I started looking I thought “what are you doing, do one thing at a time”! No wonder I lose track of stuff.

I am hoping my brain will buck up it’s ideas and start working to full capacity again! I don’t want to keep being one of these people who puts their keys in the sink (I truly don’t know why I did this, and you can imagine how much time I spent hunting for they) or who phones up to cancel their bank card then remembers where said bank card is the second its been deactivated, but it seems that is my destiny for now!

One of the many side effects of becoming a new Mum…. and I wouldn’t swap it for anything!!

Thanks for reading xx

  1. For me it’s not just been a new mum thing, it never really improved after baby #1 and only got worse after baby #2!! I often forget the list when shopping and even when I do remember it I still manage to forgot something. 🤔😝😭

  2. Great post! My hands are up because I definitely have Mumnesia! Everything that you said I have definitely experienced. It’s really bad…I have to write everything down. I forget my thoughts in the middle of a sentence and it takes me hours sometimes to remember exactly what I was thinking. I’ve also responded to texts days later. It’s crazy, but you’re right it’s worth it for the kids.

  3. Haha this made me laugh – I totally have mumnesia!! I can’t tell you how many times I’m going up and down the stairs due to my forgetfulness. Now I understand why my mum always had a list with her…fab post! Xx

  4. Hi Fi
Did the scientists say how long you can get away with saying you’re forgetful because you are a new mother 😉 My kids are 9 and 13 and I have to say my brain is like a sieve!! I try and explain it away by saying its because I am multitasking and my brain is crammed full of after school activities and lists of things I need to get done in the week! But it is definitely worth it, having such great kids!
    Thanks for sharing

  5. Love it! This is most definitely me! Someone asked me last week where I had got married and I literally could not remember!! They looked at me as though I was crazy and in the end I blurted out, Ive had five kids, as though this was all the explanation needed!! #justanotherlinky

  6. So far, it’s not getting any better for me (sorry; I wish I could give you more hope!). I don’t think it got any better between the first and the second baby either. But I’ve kind of learnt to roll with it now. Like, when I lose something I look in the most stupid and unlikely places first. I’ve found my car keys in the fridge, my phone in the cutlery drawer and pretty much everything else under the sofa. And if I ever stop trying to put the cereal box in the fridge after fixing O his breakfast, I’ll be sure to let you know! X #KCACOLS

  7. Mumnesia – brilliant! I find that since having children I can’t even finish a though process and then forget what I was even trying to think about! Drives me insane. I am a real list girl too. I’ve taken to using the notes on my phone as a list and also using the diary on my phone as it is the one thing that is always with me (I know – totally addicted to it!) so I can always check diary and add to the ever growing long lists wherever I am! Glad to hear that I’m not alone! #KCACOL

  8. I never knew you’d been a PA! Me too – and I remember thinking ages ago about how being a mum is very similar to being a PA (albeit my actual work bosses have been significantly less demanding!!) I used to think that the mumnesia was linked to sleep deprivation, but I’m no longer sleep deprived and I still can’t remember things! Lists are the only way for me I find (although I still end up finding things in strange places – biscuit tin in the fridge? Obviously!) #KCACOLS

  10. hahaha great post and I have this still at three and 6 years old. Is that normal? The other day I couldn’t find where I had put my house keys and was locked in the house and late for the school run as a result! 🙂 #KCACOLS

    1. Yes! I fear it’s something we’re going to be stuck with for life ha ha! Oh no that sounds like a nightmare start to the day!! Hope you got a spare set made – keep them in the car for such emergencies! xx

  11. Great list! I do so many of these things, including random several days later texts. Lists work for me, but I will usually think of things to put on my list at 3am or while I’m in the shower and can’t remember what it was when I am sitting down to write the list. Lately my big forget is I will open a tab o the computer to do something and then forget what I was doing! #KCACOLS

  12. I had this so bad after Marianna was born – I couldn’t remember anything! It got better once I went back to work though, but Anthony seemed to get it all instead. I really think it’s to do with the exhaustion and sleep deprivation; he’s a SAHD and he’d just forget everything, from shutting the fridge door to wearing odd socks. 🙂 #KCACOLS

  13. Now that I’m 13 months into it, I don’t think I can quite use the ‘new mom’ excuse. …And yet, my memory is as terrible as ever!
I can’t even tell you how many times I did that stupid shopping list thing, until I finally started putting my list into the ‘notes’ app on my phone. I misplace my phone often too though, so that doesn’t ALWAYS work 😛 #justanotherlinky

  14. yep, baby brain def carries on I think! we should give ourselves a break though. it’s me in this house that remembers umpteen birthdays, presents, anniversarys, due dates etc etc etc. I use lists too and my outlook calendar. wouldn’t be without it 🙂 #KCACOLS

  15. Yes I feel this. My babies have ruined what was once quite a good memory. I fear it may never be fully reinstated! And the texting thing, I am so with you, it was once almost a hobby now I barely remember I have outstanding messages. I too like a list, it gives me direction and helps me remember everything. We actually have a whiteboard that I lost things on in our kitchen. Desperate times! #KCACOLS xx

  16. I don’t think I’ve got too much worse with this since being a mum… but I have always been quite forgetful! I think that when there are just so many things in your head some are bound to fall out. Very relatable post. Thanks so much for linking with #KCACOLS. I hope you come back next Sunday.

  17. This is so me. My husband keeps laughing at me as I seem to have forgotten words and so everything is the “do da” or “thingy”. That’s accompanied by flappy hands trying to demonstrate what the hell I’m on about!

  18. Aha this is so true!! I’ve always needed lists to remember anything and now it’s even worse. A jar of Nutella literally disappeared the other day and the only conclusion we could come to is that I put it in the bin! Nightmare, I was gutted. I love texting during the night feed too!! #chucklemums

  19. LOL I have this all the time……. I was just thinking that I’m sure I’ve seen your name somewhere….yeah I’ve just tweeted you because your posts make me laugh. My kids just gaze at me now when they see me stood stock still with a puzzled look on my face….they know!! I do have the courtesy of reminding them that this is what childbirth did to me, along with a stomach that once had muscles and wasn’t round, oh how they laugh!

  20. I totally blame my daughter for my mumnesia and as I’m getting older it’s getting worse. As well as the usual stuff, like totally forgetting my shopping list too every time, and the blogging, I am also trying to write a book and that pops in every now and again it’s all too much I can’t cope lol #kcaols

  21. My children are 5 and 2 and my brain still hasn’t returned to it’s pre-baby state, I think I’m stuck this way forever! My husband gets really annoyed with me because I so often trail off halfway through a sentence or forget a word that’s quite essential to the point I’m trying to make! x #KCACOLS
