28 weeks – Babymoon Time!

Cley Windmill

Hi Everyone,

Well as you’ll have noticed, I didn’t do my usual weekly bump update last week.  And this is because I was busy enjoying myself and relaxing on Babymoon!

From what I’ve read, babymoon’s are quite a “new” thing but I think they are a great idea.  It’s a wonderful excuse to get away with your other half and enjoy some time together before two becomes three!!  We actually had our mini break booked way back at the start of the year but someone (!) was horrendously sick and we decided to delay it and make it a babymoon, as well as the original reason to celebrate, my lovely husbands birthday.

So, for our mini break we went to an amazing hidden gem on the North Norfolk coast!   My husband has a fascination with windmills and at the time of booking I thought what better place to go than here!   We went to Cley Windmill which is located in the lovely village of Cley next the Sea.   The windmill looks over the marshes out to the sea and you can also see nearby Blakeney Point.  One of the things we loved the most was hearing the surprisingly relaxing sound of the reeds in the sea breeze!  We were incredibly lucky with the weather and made the most of the outdoor seating area with a glass of non alcoholic wine!!

Our room was amazing.  The windmill has several beautiful rooms and we were lucky enough to be in the Stone Room which is one of two tower rooms. The room had a really authentic feel to it due to it’s location within the building and was therefore circular.  It had amazing high beams, and a beautifully comfortable bed!

We also had a lovely welcome bag thanks to our special celebrations which was such a lovely personal touch. I must say we were well looked after and Simon and Sarah were incredibly accommodating of my pregnancy.

But I have to say the most spectacular part of our stay was the view from our room.  It was absolutely stunning and as you can see below I took some pictures both at dusk and in the morning.  We were incredibly lucky as our room had a balcony that we could access directly from our room any time we wanted (although the next morning I realised there was a side door where other guests could come and admire the view from the balcony which I had not noticed until I surprised a fellow guest in my pyjamas! Oops)!

The location of Cley windmill is perfect for those who enjoy a good walk!  We went for a lovely walk down to the beach, which was very relaxed and peaceful – this is not your typical “seaside” town.  It is a quiet little village, with a few fishermen dotted about and the locals taking their dogs for a walk.  It was a bit chilly so there was certainly no paddling in the sea, but it really was so peaceful and pretty.  And with the windmill behind us, we were treated to the most spectacular view of it on our walk back:

After a lovely peaceful night sleep, we were treated to a slap up breakfast where you could even order in proper fish breakfasts (kippers, etc, if that takes your fancy) along with various options such as cereal, fruit, porridge, eggs however you like them and of course a full english breakfast – much needed when you’re eating for two!

I loved all the little touches at the windmill; the lovely outdoor seating area, the communal lounge (the cosiest room ever) complete with complimentary sherry if the mood takes you, and the various historical pictures and information dotted about of the windmill as it’s evolved over the years.

I cannot recommend Cley Windmill enough for a mini break of any kind  and send a huge thank you to Simon and Sarah for such a wonderful stay.  If you’re interested in booking, further information can be seen here:

Why have a babymoon

Now on to why I think a babymoon is a fantastic idea!  Pregnancy is such an exciting time with the anticipation of two becoming three!  Whilst we were away, one of the things that was in my head the whole time was to not take a moment for granted because this will be the last time for years that the two of us could just do whatever we wanted.  Now is the time to relish saying “I’m going to go for a bath, or lets go for a long walk” and just go and do it!  I cannot wait for our little one to get here, but I know I will treasure this past weekend for these reasons of being able to do what we wanted, when we wanted.  As anyone who is pregnant or has had a baby will vouch for, all you hear throughout your pregnancy is that life will never be the same again once baby is here – and this is very true!  So what better way to reconnect with your other half, away from the chaos of putting together prams, and decorating nurseries, than by having a tranquil break for  just the two of you.

Also relaxation is key! I myself am now in the third trimester and am starting to get uncomfortable and I get tired very easily so it was lovely to be able to put my feet up, guilt free and just read, watch TV or chat absolute rubbish (something hubby and I do fantastically well)!  Before long, nesting will kick in and you’ll be cleaning, organising and not really taking the time to relax as much as you deserve to.  So make the most of it.  Pregnancy, as beautiful as it is, can also be an anxious and stressful time.  Having some peace and quiet away from it all, just you and your other half, gives you both the opportunity to slow down, unwind and focus on what is really important to you both – your happily expanding family.

It’s also a time to really appreciate your other half.  It was lovely to just spend quality time together, go for dinner, and excitedly chat about our baby and how our lives are going to change.  We are both really positive people and apart from a couple of “we must get everything organised right now ” meltdowns on my part, we’ve really enjoyed the build up to our babies arrival, from buying clothes and nursery furniture, to preparing and organising things around the house!   Now that we’ve got so much done, it felt like we could really enjoy chatting about how things are going to change over the next few months.  It’s so important to communicate as a couple.  Obviously (and quite rightly) us girls get all the attention during the nine months of pregnancy.  But this is Daddys baby too and it’s important to keep them involved, listen to their opinions, take their advice on things and share the journey as a couple!

Enjoy this time to be carefree and do as you please – pamper, read, eat, sleep – whatever it is you like to do to unwind.  And enjoy the excitement that your next break away will be with your beautiful new baby!
